The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. Bill Mayer

Bill Mayer has founded and exited multiple start-ups in the technology and finance sectors. His areas of expertise are in finance, securities and quantitative analysis. He has founded and worked with numerous businesses covering a broad range of industry sectors ranging from start-up ventures through Fortune 500 companies.

Client engagements have covered a broad range of services including market strategy, portfolio structure and the IPO process. Bill has managed over $125 million in client assets.

Areas of specialty are financial modeling, pricing strategies, the process of private and public equity securitization, management of business assets and fundraising. He has extensive experience in creating financial models, business valuations, capitalization tables, as well as navigating advanced business tax issues and the complex issues surrounding securitization. This allows Bill to effectively position clients from an investor’s viewpoint in order to maximize a venture’s ability to receive funding.

Rick Scofield

Rick’s career has included purchasing and selling companies – both in North America and internationally. The companies involved furnished manufacturing and design services ranging from simple metal stampings through decorative plastics to highly technical electronic design and manufacturing.

He also served on the board of a bank for many years so has a clear idea of how financial institutions view business lending.

He has combined those backgrounds with a significant time on the boards of various charitable and governmental organizations to provide insight and guidance to would be entrepreneurs and small business owners via the SCORE program. In that capacity Rick has mentored over 300 individuals and businesses in the past four years.

Christa Chambers-Price

Christa's story started when she prevented one of her squad members in the Army from blowing themselves up. The official mission was to complete a live ammunition exercise, the REAL mission was to show strength and compassion in the face of extreme adversity and not leave anyone behind. 25 years later, Christa is determined to do whatever it takes to bring any entrepreneur across the sometimes treacherous battlefield of entrepreneurship. Her discipline and dogged determination comes from her experience as an Army National Guard combat telecommunications specialist. As part of the military intelligence division, she has managed critical data during peacetime missions. She later was tapped to join the FBI as a fingerprint analyst. After graduating from The University of Michigan, her work continued at organizations such as EDS and General Motors to start-up software development companies.

Leslie Smith

Leslie Lynn Smith joined TechTown in 2010 to be on the ground floor of economic development in Detroit – the city she loves and where she was born. She came to the nonprofit accelerator and incubator from the Michigan Economic Development Corp. (MEDC), where she served as director of business acceleration, overseeing the state’s $300 million investment portfolio. She also managed its innovation ecosystem known as SmartZones, which feature rich partnerships and programming between research universities, accelerators and the private sector.

Before joining the MEDC, Smith was CFO of Ann Arbor-based real estate firm McKinley Inc., and director of real estate for Trammell Crow Co. in Auburn Hills.

Smith serves on the board of directors and executive committee for Midtown Detroit, Inc.
